One number would have the same effect it always has. When I was reducing the volume, one number would make the Volume numbers seem to be as loud as I expected them afterĪnd it was doing something else odd that I didn't mention previously. I'm still worried that the fix won't be long term. That technique is actually mentioned in my owners manual asĪ corrective action for "anything abnormal". Pushing the three buttons simultaneously seems to have fixed it. I may just go for a new reciever so I can get HDMI input/output capability. Turning the system off and turning it back on again did help.Īny suggestions about what might be broke and how difficult it is to repair are welcome. Using the physical knob didn't really help. I'm guessing the thing is designed to amplify the sound and the adjustment actually backs the signal down (versus the opposite - which is how I mentally imagine it). It appears to be like the receiver has lost control of its ability to attenuate. and that number is traditionally almost imaudible sound.Īt first I suspected some other gear (my disc player, my decoder) but I'm now convinced its the Harman Kardon reciever - and its doing it on the analog input as well as the digital (my first instinct was the digital input had gone crazy somehow). but -63 sounds louder than anything I would ever play. If I get it all the way -64, the sound goes away. and when I adjust the volume, the number display changes - but the sound remains constant. anything louder than -20 starts to seem dangerous to my speakers. I typically keep the volume between -30 and -20. I don't see it rotating - but I can't really say if it ever rotated (I could have it confused with something else). I think the volume knob used to rotate when I made an adjustment with the remote. Less loud, the number gets larger (-30 to -40 is a reduction in volume). Gets smaller (-30 to -20 is an increase in volume). If I adjust the volume using the remote, the reciever typically displays a negative number like "-30". This is very concerning because I don't want to blow my speakers. To my dismay, I noticed that my receiver now seems to be having a problem where it goes to FULL VOLUME against my wishes. My only complaint has beenįeatures that came out later (i.e. I believe I purchased it in 2000 - so it is approximately 9 years old now. I think the model number is AVR 500.ĥ.1 inputs (coax/optical/analog) and 5.1 speaker outputs.
